So here is an explanation of how a director’s cut dvd in Korea usually comes about.
First of all, dcut dvds are FAN REQUESTED dvds ie they are produced only if there is popular demand for one to be made. Although content varies from DVD to DVD, most will have extra/NG videos (usually adding up to about an hr’s worth of footage at least), commentary by the actors/director and of course unseen/cut scenes from the drama itself. Most of the time there will also be extra photobooks, or postcards or some sort of accessory included.
So generally, the big fans of the drama will gather together and give their details showing their interest in buying a director’s cut dvd if there was one. At the moment, a korean daum cafe has been set up for the Korean fans who would be interested in buying a director’s cut dvd to sign up and leave their details
At the moment, there are about 1000 names or so (as of1/11/10), but at least 3000 names would be needed for the production companies to even consider making one. Obviously the more people interested the better. The current situation with SKKS is that the 2 production companies who hold copyrights to the drama already seem to have plans to release a normal version dvd. So the objective here is to gather as big a number as possible to CHANGE their minds. So we are aiming for at least 1500-2000.
If satisfactory numbers are reached and the production companies decide to go ahead with it, then the contents, price and various details of the dvd are slowly decided after communication between fans and production companies/director. So here, fans have a bit of a say and can make suggestions as to what they would like to see in the dvd.
Although prices can vary, assume a price of around US$130
